Modified Visual Essay Collaboration Reflection

Write a paragraph in which you reflect on (not simply summarize) your role in your group's collaborative process. How did you facilitate the collaboration? What would you do differently next time to better facilitate the collaboration? Be sure to reference specific examples from your group work.

  1. Today in our collaboration things went pretty smoothly. We didn't argue, we just bounced ideas off of each other. I helped facilitate conversation, but things went pretty smoothly. One example of this is when we couldn't decide which photos to use, so I thought we should go over the justification for each one. We worked things out rationally. One thing I think we could do better next time is have some ideas beforehand. We didn't know what we were going to take pictures of before, so we had to discuss that during our photography time, and that could have lead to arguments. We could avoid any possibility of arguments if we knew what we wanted to capture.

  2. I think our collaboration today was very successful and not tense at all. Before we set to take photos, we quickly discussed where our character's traits would most stand out, and set a plan for where we would go. As the photo shoot went along, I gave out various ideas of what parts of the room we should take pictures of, and what types of picture they could be. We never got into any arguments, and the pictures came out very well. Overall, my role was mainly presenting options of what photos we could take. I think that next time we could try taking more pictures in general because then we would have more choices of what photos to present.

    Reflection

I thought the visual assignment today was an interesting way of approaching the understanding of characters from Mr. Penumbra’s 24 hour bookstore. Something I gained from this project was learning that when taking a picture use different angles to create a story through the image. My regret from this project was that we as a group didn’t decide on how to take pictures. For example, when we took the picture of the decorative door we didn’t focus on the the details. Instead we took a picture of the whole door which gave a slightly misleading idea for the trait. But I think overall as a group we worked pretty productively. We got everything done on time without any arguments or conflicts. I believe my group’s work was spread out pretty evenly. Everyone contributed their ideas, and everyone gave their perspectives on an idea. I think my main role in the group was contributing the ideas of pictures or where to take the pictures. An example would be when we were trying to think of ideas of creativity I thought to go to the enameling room. Unfortunately it was occupied, but that then brought up the idea of tools which led me to think of the wood room. Although I gave ideas of what to take pictures of I wish I remembered to use different techniques when taking pictures. Next time I hope to again work productively with my group and us some new photography techniques.

  4. I thought our collaboration today went quite well. There was no arguing and everyone got along fairly well. I think everything pretty much went perfect, we could have done a better job presenting but other than that everything was fine. It was a very enjoyable experience.

  5. I thought that our visual collaboration today went very well, was relaxed and efficient. We first talked about our character’s traits and which types of photographic shots we wanted to use. We then went to places that best represented the trait. I contributed by giving ideas for where and how we should take the photos such as a “close up” shot. I was also in some of the photos trying to “be” our character. I attempted to portray the emotions and traits the character would feel, such as curiosity . I think that this project was very fun and successful, but some things could have been done to make it better. I think that we should have brought an actual camera because iPhones do not take the best quality photos. I also think we should have left ourselves more time to take photos.

  7. Today’s collaboration went very well. My group stayed on task and communicated well. If someone thought that something would’ve been better in a certain / different way, that person would express that and as a group, we would make compromises. As a member of the group, I would suggest places that our character would go to, as well as make suggestions to our “model” about what would better represent the character more. One thing I wish we would have worked on was managing our time better. Personally, I didn’t realize how much time we had left, which affected the result of the pictures because we felt rushed. This may have implied something about the character that was not intentional. For example, one of our pictures was slightly slanted, which may have implied a disorganized character trait which was not what we were trying to accomplish.

  8. In today's class, we did an assignment where we would take photos in the eyes of a certain character from Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore. This assignment required my peers and I to to work as a team in order to complete the assignment. While this assignment was very fun, it was a bit difficult to find ways we could show the character traits we picked for our character in just pictures. Even though it was difficult, we were still completed the assignment fairly quickly. Looking back on the assignment, I feel like my group and I could have been more creative. After seeing the photos one other group took, it made me feel as if my groups photos were not as creative as they could have been.

Overall, I think that like what most people said, my group collaborated rather smoothly. Even though my group was small I feel that had a specific role in the group compared to my partners. Even though my whole group took photos, I think that I did the least of it, so I would not call myself the photographer of the group. I took some of the photos of the entrance to the archives, but they were not used. I mainly focused on giving my group ideas. I think that I gave ideas about how we should convey our trait, and what we should take a photo of. Even though some of my ideas were not always used, I think that these ideas helped the group. For example, for one of our photos we were taking picture of the library, and I suggested that we should have a shoulder in the shot to convey that our character was on a tour. I think that we could have done a few things to improve our collaboration. Firstly, I think that we should have stopped before taking our photos to come up with a plan. Even though we had a general idea of what to take, for some shots we were just finding things that we thought would relate to a trait. Next, we should asked if rooms were open before shooting. We were planning to take some photos in the Poly archives, but it was closed. Finally, I think that if we wanted we could have used a better camera. Even though the iphone camera is great, I think that we would have a better time conveying our character’s trait we used a better camera. Overall, I think my group did very well, and I have pleased with our final product.

  11. Our modified visual essay collaboration project went well for me. My team worked well together, and we each had a chance to speak our minds and work our shots out in a civilized way. We each put in as much as each-other and came out with an beautiful product. I would, however give a bit more time to trade and review ideas, as the time-crunch we were on rushed the process a bit too much.

  12. I thought that the collaborative group project was an effective, creative and interesting way of creating our assignment. I think my group worked well together because we were all open to each others ideas and didn’t all want to do it our way. I think this also might have been the case because that was the first time we had done that so we didn’t really know what to expect. In my group my role included narrowing down the character traits, taking some photos, and staging some photos. Although we did not have any conflict we didn’t have some creative differences, that we all worked to get through. They were minor, but I think they helped our group understand the project better and decide how we were going to continue. I facilitated the collaboration by actively participating. There was not one person who did the majority of the work we all had equal parts. Next time, to better facilitate the collaboration, I might suggest that we do the majority of the planning ahead of time. We did about half of it during the time we were supposed to take photos. I think we then became short on time and didn’t have the amount of time we would have liked to sort through our photos. Overall, I thought we all worked really well together and I am looking forward to the next time we do it.

Working with my group was a easy and fun experience. We were able to share creative ideas and agree on what the pictures should be. Nicky and Sam were good partners who I felt like I could share my thoughts with and would have them accepted.

  14. Overall, I feel great about my group’s work ethic. Both Wally and Aidan were dedicated and enthusiastic, leading to a smooth working environment and driven creative process. The first few minutes of our time was spent discussing the character traits we wanted to emphasize and locations that would work best, however I think a more definitive plan, specifically about angles would have been helpful. Although at times there were lulls in the idea generation, the successful teamwork throughout the process was apparent and, as the photographer, I was able to translate our ideas into beautiful photographs. Our ability to distribute the workload evenly and collaborate made the whole experience nothing short of lovely.
